5 Essential Vaccines Every Child Should Receive

November 3, 2024

Did you know that children who are not vaccinated have a high chance of getting preventable diseases? At times, these diseases may cause major complications or even send them to the hospital right up to death. Moreover, unvaccinated children may also be at risk of causing diseases to others, especially those that cannot yet be vaccinated or those whose immunities are weakened.

One of the biggest tasks that parents face is ensuring that our children are protected against killer diseases through vaccination. Childhood vaccinations are the cornerstone of public health, providing protection for individual children and communities at large from a wide array of preventable diseases. In this blog, we discuss 5 essential vaccines for children to empower the right decision-making process and pave a smooth, safe, and effective vaccination journey for your child.

Vaccine for children Vaccination against infectious diseases is considered one of the best ways to protect your child from the most serious and potentially life-threatening diseases. It helps the immune system develop immunity against specific germs by learning how to fight that germs.

1. Hepatitis B
  • When: birth, 1-2 months, and 6-18 months.
  • Why: The vaccine will protect against diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.

2. Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis
  • When: 2, 4, 6, and 15-18 months, and booster at 4-6 years.
  • Why: Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that can swell the glands in the throat, which can make it difficult to breathe. Tetanus causes stiffness of muscles and spasms; pertussis (whooping cough) is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be dangerous for an infant.

3. Hib.
  • When: 2, 4, 6, and 12-15 months.
  • Why: Severe infections like pneumonia, meningitis, epiglottitis can be caused by Hib.

4. Polio (IPV)
  • When: 2, 4, 6-18 months, and a booster at 4-6 years.
  • Why: Polio is a viral infection that can result in paralysis.

5. Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
  • When: 12-15 months, with a second dose at 4-6 years.
  • Why: These three viral infections can cause severe complications. Measles results in pneumonia or encephalitis, mumps can lead to deafness or sterility, and rubella is particularly dangerous in pregnancy.
