Understanding Scoliosis in Children: Signs, Diagnosis, and Treatment

February 3, 2025

Does your child have abnormal curvature of the spine that is either in the shape of an S or C? It is a deformity that may affect people of any age, but usually, it is diagnosed in children and teenagers when they are experiencing growth streams. Early detection and intervention can usually avoid any further complication of the problem and give your child the best chance of a good outcome with regards to his wellbeing .As a parent or caregiver, you need to be aware when the signs might indicate early detection of scoliosis, allowing the child to receive adequate care and intervention.

In this blog, we will try to explain what scoliosis is and the diagnostic and treatment options of management of the disorder. Whether you suspect having a posture problem in your child or you have just been informed that he or she was diagnosed with the condition, some basic knowledge of scoliosis will assist you on your journey toward maintaining the wellbeing and health of your child’s spine.

Diagnosis of scoliosis

It follows a blend of an observational examination and imaging tests. The healthcare provider will be looking for signs of any abnormal curvature of the spine and may ask your child to bend forward so that he/she may get a closer look at the back. If there might be a chance your child has a scoliosis, further investigations by way of X-ray or MRI may be done to fulfill some other aspects related to the curvature extent and whether some other disease or condition instigates the spinal problems.

Signs of Scoliosis in Children

There are several indications that one can evaluate the condition of scoliosis in children. These include:

  • Uneven Shoulders or Hips: One shoulder may appear elevated compared to the other, with one side of the child’s pelvis being higher.
  • Leaning: The child may also exhibit a tilt of the body or a slight lean while in a standing position or walking.
  • An asymmetrical Ribcage: The ribcage may have an obvious bump or an asymmetrical appearance as the child bends forward.
  • Back Pain: Scoliosis rarely causes pain; such pain becomes more common but still is not so after about the third or fourth phase.

If you have any of these, consult a physician for a full examination.

Treatment Options for Scoliosis

  • The treatment for scoliosis depends on a few factors, such as:
  • The degree of spinal curvature
  • The age of the child
  • The extent of progressive worsening
  • Observation: If the curvature is mild (usually less than 25 degrees), the doctor probably will just watch the curvature regularly over a period (sometimes years) to see that it does not worsen.
  • Bracing: In moderately severe cases (20 to 45 degrees), a doctor may prescribe a brace that can prevent further curvature.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy with specific exercises and stretching to strengthen the muscles surrounding the spine, thereby improving posture and avoiding back pain, has become quite popular.
  • Surgical Interventions: Surgery may be recommended in a severe case (typically curvature greater than 45 and 50 degrees) or any case that progress rapidly.
